Elephant falls to death

Staff Reporter

VALPARAI: Forest Department personnel have left the carcass of a nine-year-old female elephant, which reportedly died a few days ago, after falling accidentally from a deep slope in the thick forests at Mandhirimattam, on the border of Ulandy and Manombolli ranges of Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary here.

Forest officials said that the carcass was neither buried nor burnt after conducting a post mortem examination on Tuesday.

As there was no scope for it to spread diseases, it was left to scavengers, an official of the department said.

The pachyderm died of internal bleeding after if fell from a height of 100 m and broke its right hind leg.
