CUTTACK: Members of the Orissa High Court Bar Association, at an emergency meeting held on Wednesday, decided to boycott the court proceedings on Thursday and Friday in protest against the reported request made by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik urging the Chief Justice to consider opening permanent High Court circuit benches in Berhampur and Sambalpur. The Chief Minister had made the request which was brought to the notice of the bar association secretary by some members calling for a general body meeting to condemn such a move by the government. Members of the bar alleged that the Chief Minister’s move was nothing but a political gimmick to woo voters keeping in view the ensuing Assembly elections. “The Chief Minister has made the request to gain some political mileage knowing very well that such a request cannot be considered by the High Court,” said bar association secretary B.S. Tripathy. He said that only Parliament can decide whether any bench of the High Court should be set up at any place or not. “Moreover, the request made by the Chief Minister also violates the recommendations made by the National Law Commission,” he added.
