BHUBANESWAR: Though the threat of cyclone cast its shadow over the Children’s Day celebrations, non-governmental organisations and various departments of the State government mobilised students and children from slums to celebrate the day here on Wednesday. Many students from coastal districts at the State-level Sishu Pratibha Utsab cut short their programme and went to their houses after cyclone alert was sounded on Tuesday. Students who passed different levels of competitions were given away awards here. SC, ST and OBC Minister Chaitanya Prasad Majhi exhorted students to excel in their academic pursuit and work for nation’s development. The Sishu Pratibha Utsab was organised by the School and Mass Education Department. On the eve of Children’s Day, speaker Maheswar Mohanty inaugurated a Youth Parliament, which was organised to encourage students to become people’s representatives to voice the concerns of the voiceless. Students from senior secondary schools discussed issues like poverty, hunger, women empowerment and environment. Discussions were held akin to debate in Parliament. Chief Secretary Ajit Kumar Tripathy participated in the programme. Centre for Child and Women Development (CCWD), a city-based NGO, celebrated the day by organising fun-filled competitions among children of Nilamadhaba Slum.
