Periyakaruppan lauded the gesture of Sri Narayani Peedam, Thirumalaikkodi near here in undertaking social welfare projects along with its spiritual activities. Participating in a function held at Sripuram, which houses the gold-coated Sri Lakshmi Narayani Temple, in connection with the hoisting of the national flag at the entrance to Sripuram on Wednesday, Mr. Periyakaruppan said that the Peedam was running a hospital and a school and was helping poor people meet their medical expenses. Thus it was not only engaged in promoting spiritualism, but also undertaking social welfare projects aimed at ameliorating the sufferings of the people. Durai Murugan, Public Works Department Minister, who hoisted the national flag, said the establishment of Sripuram has resulted in a huge flow of pilgrims to witness the golden temple, thus contributing to the economic development of Vellore. The transport companies and hotels in Vellore were doing good business thanks to heavy flow of pilgrims to Sripuram. He praised the gesture of Sri Sakthi Amma, Head of the Sri Narayani Peedam in deciding to meet the medical expenses of 300 children who had to undergo heart surgery. Mr. Durai Murugan requested Sri Sakthi Amma to give Tamil its due status in the conduct of poojas in the temple. Sri Sakthi Amma said that while the Poojas in the Sri Narayani Temple were performed in Sanskrit, the Thiruppalli Ezhuchi every morning is performed in Tamil. Thevaram is taught to the students of the school run by the Peedam, he said.
