GULBARGA: Former president of the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India and diabetician Murlidhar S. Rao said here on Wednesday that diabetes was a fast spreading throughout the world. The most disturbing fact was a large number of children and adolescents were living with Type 1 diabetes, he said. The United Nations has now recognised the serious threat posed by diabetes and declared November 14 as a United Nations World Diabetes Day from this year. The U.N., International Diabetes Federation and World Health Organisation have declared the theme of World Diabetes Day of 2007 and 2008 as “Diabetes in Children and Adolescents”. Dr. Rao said that around 246 million people were living with diabetes throughout the world and more than 42 million diabetic patients were in our country. Within the next two decades, the number of people with diabetics in the country was likely to cross 70 million, he added.
