Project launched to modernise backward districts in the country

Staff Correspondent

It will compensate for shortcomings in the Sama Vikas Yojana

Chitradurga district will get Rs. 20 crore by December for the project

Gram panchayats to get 50 per cent of funds

Chitradurga: The Union Government has launched a special project called Backward Regions Grant Fund (BRGF) for the advancement of around 150 backward districts of the country, said zilla panchayat chief executive officer H.P. Prakash.

Chairing the zilla panchayat general meeting here on Wednesday, he said the five-year project was an extension of the Sama Vikas Yojana, which was aimed at developing backward districts of the country. Mr. Prakash said that the project had been launched to compensate for shortcomings in the Sama Vikas Yojana, where a few sectors such as education and sanitation had not been given the desired prominence.

Under the project, the district is expected to receive around Rs. 20 crore by the end of this year.

In the first phase, the district administration has been asked to submit a project report for the first financial year, while the plan for the next four years would be prepared later, he said.

The project proposes to allocate around 50 per cent funds to gram panchayats and 25 per cent to taluk panchayats. “The District Planning Committee has been asked to submit a plan of action within a fortnight to enable release of funds,” Mr. Prakash said.

When Janata Dal (Secular) member Tippeswamy raised the issue of constituting a committee to investigate allegations made with regard to the drip irrigation project, the chief executive officer said the committee had already been constituted and was being headed by zilla panchayat president Geeta Nandini Gowda. When a few members expressed concerned over students in rural areas facing difficulties with regard to securing admission to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe hostels in the city, G.H. Tippareddy, MLA, said that Rs. 5 lakh each could be given from the MLA’s local area development fund for construction of more such hostels.
