State meet of khazis on November 28

Special Correspondent

To discuss Supreme Court order on marriage registration

Kozhikode: A convention of khazis and representatives of Muslim mahals in the State is being convened on November 28 in the city to discuss the implications of the recent Supreme Court order that makes registration with a government–appointed authority marriages conducted in all religious groups compulsory.

The meeting has been called by Kerala Jam-Eyyathul Mahallu Val Khulathu formed for the purpose. This is the first joint meeting of khazis and representatives of Muslim mahals in the State.

The organisers of the programme said the convention would discuss in details various issues thrown up by the Supreme Court order, especially how it would affect the authority of khazis in Muslim mahals.

The programme organisers believe that if the apex court becomes law marriages conducted by mahal-khazis and registration certificates issued by mahal committees ,which have been recognised by successive governments including that of the British for centuries, would become invalid.

Sainul Ulama Cherusseri Zainuddin Musalir, general secretary-Samastha Kerala Jam-Eyyathul Ulama, which has branches in Gulf countries, has more than 25 million followers and manages 25,000 madrassas and masjids in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andaman and Lakshadweep, will preside over the function which will be held at Nalanda auditorium at 11 am. The convention will be inaugurated by Panakkad Sayyyed Umer Ali Shihab Thangal.
