Bangalore: G.T. Deve Gowda, MLA and chairman of the Karnataka State Cooperative Federation, has said the Government will launch a membership drive with a view to strengthening the cooperative movement. Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr. Deve Gowda, who was Minister for Cooperation in the Kumaraswamy government, said as of now 2.5 crore people had enrolled themselves in cooperative institutions. He said the date of the launch of the drive had not been decided. He said the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had instructed commercial banks to convince at least one person in every family to open a bank account, both in rural and urban areas. The same programme would be implemented by cooperative banks also, the former Minister said. On involving house building cooperative societies (HBCSs) in providing cheap houses to the poor and needy, he said it required an amendment to the Karnataka Land Reforms Act and the Karnataka State Cooperative Act to enable them to seek acquisition of land.
