THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Cabinet on Wednesday decided to set up an eight-member Law Reforms Commission with the former Supreme Court judge V.R. Krishna Iyer as chairman. The Commission will look into changes needed in the statute book including unification of similar or identical laws. The members of the Commission will be former High Court judges T.V. Ramakrishnan and C. S. Rajan; advocate Kelu Nambiar; Members of Parliament Varkala Radhakrishnan and Sebastian Paul; Legislature Secretary N.K. Jayakumar; and Law Secretary P. S. Gopinathan. (The previous government had appointed a Law Reforms Committee headed by the then Law Minister K.M. Mani. Though the committee presented its first report soon after, much of its recommendations remained unimplemented). The Cabinet also decided to order a Vigilance inquiry into the appointment of a consultant for the Theerapadam Project in Thiruvananthapuram during the period of the UDF government without Cabinet approval.
