Kolkata: A silent rally, led by a section of the city’s artists and writers, was taken out here on Wednesday in protest against the recent developments at Nandigram in West Bengal’s Purbo Medinipur district. Prominent individuals, including writer-activist Mahasweta Devi, film directors Mrinal Sen and Goutam Ghosh, danseuse Mamata Shankar, singer Purnadas Baul, painters Suvaprasanna and Jogen Chowdhury, theatre artiste Saonli Mitra and poet Joy Goswami, among several others, took part. The participants, including students, marched in protest against the alleged oppression in Nandigram. Social activist Medha Patkar also participated in the march. The text of an email, sent by prominent intellectual and political commentator Noam Chomsky on Tuesday, was circulated. It said: “I have been following the grim events in Nandigram and their consequences. I am worried.” Ms. Patkar exhorted people to carry on the march to Nandigram. “We demand not just the rehabilitation of those affected, but the reconstruction and revival of real democracy at Nandigram,” she added.
