Army for re-designating Brigadiers
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: The Army has sought the re-designation of Brigadiers as Brigadiers-General.
A request has been made to the Defence Ministry to seek parity for the Brigadiers with Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) as well as to emulate the practice in other armies.
Chief of the Army Staff, Gen. Deepak Kapoor, has made the request, arguing that officers in much smaller armies also have the rank. A favourable response is expected because no additional expenditure is involved.
However, the Army’s desire to insert the rank of Colonel-General between the Chief of the Army Staff, a four-star rank, and the three-star Lt. Generals, is on hold. It realises that similar demands might emanate from the Air Force and the Navy.
