Non-bailable warrant in contempt case
Legal Correspondent
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has issued a non-bailable warrant for securing the arrest of Ranjit Malhotra, son of the late Surinder Nath, former Governor of Punjab, in a contempt case.
A Bench consisting of Justices G.P. Mathur and V.S. Sirpurkar, issued the warrant on a petition filed by the Handigas Distributors, Dealers and Consumer Association, Tamil Nadu, and 14 others. They alleged that Mr. Malhotra gave advertisements in newspapers promising dealership and regular supply of gas all over India, and collected huge money from various dealers, distributors and consumers. However, within a very short time, he stopped supply and refused to return the money.
On a writ petition filed by the petitioners, the Supreme Court in May 2005 directed Mr. Malhotra to refund the amount totalling over Rs. 25 lakh in six instalments. The petition said Mr. Malhotra had not returned the money despite the court order.
