Ernakulam beaten

THALASSERY: Ernakulam fought hard but there was no stopping Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday night. The reining men’s champion won the high-scoring encounter 106-81 and topped Pool ‘A’ on its way to the quarterfinals of the 52nd Sea Star State senior basketball championship at the Municipal Stadium.

Ernakulam, which had to play as many as three games in the day, too made it to the last eight. Also making the grade from the same Pool is Thrissur, though it won only just one game.

In the women’ section, Kollam and host Kannur entered the quarterfinals from Pool ‘B’. When the two teams met this evening, Kollam won 38-27.

Thiruvananthapuram was ahead by just one point — 31-30 at the end of the first quarter, but it had the match under control before the second quarter came to a close. R. Manoj led the scoring for Thiruvananthapuram with 34 point, including four three-pointers. B. Manzoor Ahmed, Vijobi Vakkachan and T.S. Abhilash also often found the target. S.S. Deepu and Sunny Thomas did the bulk of the scoring for Ernakulam, with 26 points each.
