VIZIANAGARAM: About 80 houses were reduced to ashes and sugarcane crop in 10 acres was destroyed in a series of fire accidents reported due to bursting of crackers during ‘Nagula Chaviti’ celebrations and also due to short circuit since Tuesday afternoon.
The value of property damaged in the incidents was over Rs. 30 lakhs, according to Assistant District Fire Officer S.V. Narasimham.
About 10 houses were gutted in Butchannakoneru area in the town and six in Vellanki in Vepada mandal on Wednesday. In both the places a lighted ‘tarajuvva’ (a rocket) fell on the huts and spread to other huts due to strong surface wind.
In another incident at Santapalem in Kothavalasa mandal on Tuesday afternoon 64 houses were destroyed. In the evening at V.T. Agraharam in the town five houses were gutted.
At Annamrajupet in Jami mandal sugarcane crop in over 10 acres was destroyed when some leaves of the crop touched the hanging live wires, the ADFO said.
