MYSORE: Burglars broke into the Industrial Cooperative Bank at Ashoka Nagar in Mandya in the early hours of Wednesday and took away gold jewellery valued at Rs. 50 lakh. The burglary came to light only after the bank staff reported for duty. They found the locker open and 6.67 kg. of gold jewellery of the customers missing. According to the police, the burglars entered the bank by breaking open the rear door. The locker too was smashed open and gold jewellery pledged by customers to avail themselves of loans was taken away. It is suspected that the bank heist must have been carried out by professionals aware of lack of security after the police finished their night duty. However, the burglars did not take away the cash from the locker. Senior police officials, including Superintendent of Police Seemant Kumar Singh, visited the bank. A dog squad and forensic experts were pressed into service. The dogs went up to the railway station and lost scent. The police said that a special team would be constituted to nab the burglars.
