Dwarka to get 750-bed hospital

Staff Reporter

To be named after Indira Gandhi, it is likely to become functional by 2010

It is estimated to cost around Rs.350 crore

It will also have teaching facilities

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Cabinet has given its approval for construction of a new “Bharat Ratna Indira Gandhi Hospital” at Dwarka in the Capital at an estimated cost of Rs.350 crore.

The Cabinet also decided to set up a Delhi State Spatial Data Infrastructure for which a memorandum of understanding would be signed with the Survey of India.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who chaired the meeting, said the hospital would have teaching facilities. It would be constructed on a 15-acre plot at Dwarka and is expected to become functional by 2010.

“Since the Dwarka hospital is planned as a major facility for a sub-city of one million people, the Cabinet considered it appropriate to go in for a state-of-the-art facility which would serve the population over the next 50 to 100 years,” she said.

The hospital would provide comprehensive health care with outreach services to the residents of Dwarka and the neighbouring areas.

It would provide round-the-clock emergency services, maternity services, operation facilities and all kinds of specialist health care services along with super specialty services and act as a referral institution for patients referred from dispensaries and health centres.

Ms. Dikshit said the 750-bed hospital would be constructed as a green building and will be a teaching hospital for the proposed medical college.

As for the MoU with the Survey of India for creation of the Delhi State Spatial Data Infrastructure, the Chief Minister said it was necessary to have a proper integrated geo-spatial information system for easy access to the information regarding land uses, utility services and infrastructure for the entire Delhi.
