Call to optimise research capability

Manipal: Jocelyne Feine, professor from McGill University, Canada, said on Wednesday that International Association of Dental Research (IADR) wanted to bring researchers together to collaborate in the field of dental sciences.

She was speaking at the inaugural function of the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) India Research Initiative Workshop organised by Manipal College of Dental Sciences (MCODS) here.

Prof. Feine said that India had tremendous research capability. But this capability was yet to be utilised to its optimum. The IADR wanted to tap the full potential of India in the field of dental research. The next meeting of the IADR would be held in Toronto in July, she said.

Dean of MCODS Shobha Tandon said that research culture was yet to develop in the country. The aim of the workshop was to facilitate global networking of dental researchers to improve dental health standards. There was growing incidence of oral cancer in India.

Research should be started from the graduate level. This would help students who later wanted to take up research as a career. India was trying to develop indigenous technology to reduce costs to meet challenges in the field of dental health sciences, Prof. Tandon said.

Registrar of Manipal University H. Vinod Bhat welcomed the gathering. Pro-Chancellor of Manipal University H.S. Ballal and Associate Dean of MCODS Nirmala Rao, were present.
