TAMBARAM: In three cases of burglary in the southern suburbs, which came to light on Wednesday, several sovereigns of gold, diamond jewellery and cash were stolen.

Gold jewellery weighing about 300 sovereigns was stolen from a hotelier and flat promoter’s house in Sholinganallur. In Adambakkam, an octogenarian’s house was targeted and diamond jewels were stolen.

In both cases, the residents were away.

In Sholinganallur, the burglary came to light on Wednesday morning, when the domestic help working there reported for work.

Paul Rajhun, who owns Hotel Anitha Park Inn on Rajiv Gandhi Salai (formerly Old Mamallapuram Road) and his wife Suganthi, have been living in the rented house on the first floor on Vinayagapuram First Street for the past two years. Their son Jai Narayanan lives in Porur and their daughter Santhi in Palavakkam. As the family had to attend weddings, the businessman took gold jewels from the safe deposit locker in their bank and kept them in an almirah at his residence only a few days ago.

On Tuesday morning, the couple went to be with their daughter Santhi, who had been admitted in a private hospital for a minor surgery. After the surgery, they went with Santhi to her house in Palavakkam.

On Wednesday, Ayisha, domestic help in Paul Rajhun’s house, came to report for work at 6.30 a.m. She told the police that she noticed the door left open, but there was no sign of the businessman or his wife. She informed house owner Ramesh, living on the ground floor of the house.

He found the front door broken open. He complained to the police that gold jewels weighing nearly 300 sovereigns were missing. They were kept in the almirah. A sniffer dog picked up a scent and ran for a distance of more than one km, before stopping near a temple. S. N. Seshasai, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Adyar, said special teams were already on the job of tracking down the culprits. Thoraipakkam police said they had obtained some leads and were confident of nabbing the culprits soon.

Residents in Vinayagapuram said though petty crimes were committed regularly in the newly developing localities of Sholinganallur, this burglary was the worst grave offence they had heard of.

Adambakkam incident

And in Adambakkam, the house of a retired railway employee was struck by burglars.

Narayanan, 81, a former ticket examiner, was living on the ground floor of a house on Mahalakshmi Nagar 12th Street and his son Santhanam on the first floor. Narayanan had gone to his daughter’s house in Hosur for Deepavali.

On Wednesday, Mr. Santhanam checked the ground floor and noticed the doors broken open and the house ransacked. Gold and diamond jewels were reported to be missing, the police said.

Cash, jewels stolen

In Selaiyur near Tambaram, gold jewels weighing 15 sovereigns and Rs. 10,000 in cash were reportedly stolen from a locked house. Police said G.Pugazhendhi (52) had locked his house in Bharathi Nagar and had gone to Kodamabakkam along with his family.
