KANCHEEPURAM: The stand-off between two groups in the Kancheepuram Municipal Council seems to have affected the implementation of infrastructure development works here.
Enquiries with local body representatives have revealed that the showdown between the groups — one led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the other by the All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam — is all set to slow down the Rs.262.75-lakh Central Government-assisted road illumination improvement project.
This project, for which fund has been sanctioned by the Central Government under its Tourism Centre Development Programme, envisages replacement of existing concrete street-light poles with ultra-modern tubular steel frames along the major thoroughfares maintained by Highways Department under the town limits. It also includes installation of 16- mt tall high-mast lamps at six places and 12-mt tall high-mast lamps at seven places in the town, they pointed out.
Execution of this project hangs in balance even though resolutions seeking the Municipal Council’s consent to finalise the tenders received for this work were ‘unanimously’ passed at October 29 council meeting. Because a section of 27 councillors, who have developed a confrontational attitude towards their rival group, have sent a letter to the Municipal Commissioner, demanding that all resolutions endorsed by the council on October 29 be kept in abeyance, they said.
Several works such as laying of cement roads with funds released by Kancheepuram Pattali Kakkal Katchi MLA Sakthi Kamalammal from her local area development funds were also hanging in balance.
