KANCHEEPURAM: The Federation of Tamil Nadu Sand Lorry Owners Association has alleged that the nexus between officials and anti-socials has led to a large-scale sand larceny in Kancheepuram district.
In a memorandum, signed by president S. Yuvaraj and general secretary R. Panneerselvam and submitted to Collector Santosh K. Misra here on Wednesday, the federation pointed out that more than two units of sand were being loaded in lorries identified as ‘local vehicles’ at unauthorised quarrying points in the Palar river. However, drivers of these vehicles managed to get an ‘official receipt’ for the two units to create an impression that the sand was legally loaded in their vehicles.
Moreover, these lorries reached the official sand-loading points, jumping the queue and got loads of sand.
While they moved out of the river, additional sand was loaded on payment of Rs.500 to Rs.750 by anti-social elements since the tokens were issued at a place located at five or six km away from the sand-loading point, the federation said.
Claiming that several pleas to prevent the smuggling of sand, made to officials of the Public Works Department and the police, had failed to evoke any response, the federation called upon the district administration to set up Revenue Department check-posts near the token-issuing points to check this illegal activity.
