HYDERABAD: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited on Tuesday announced the launch of ‘TV on Mobile’ for its subscribers, powered by Apalya Technologies and with 12 television channels as content providers. Launching the service, Chief General Manager S. Ramalingam watched a demonstration of how a Telugu television channel could be viewed through a high-end Nokia GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) mobile phone. Right now, only about two dozen each of Nokia and Sony Ericsson phones could support it, he said. Mr. Ramalingam said there were three subscription plans at present. They include a ‘one channel per day’ plan Rs. 10, ‘one channel for one month’ plan for Rs. 50 and all 12 channels for Rs. 150 per month. The first month of services after registration was free as a launch offer, he said. Explaining the technical modalities, M. Ravishankar, Deputy General Manager (Mobile Services Development Planning), said the facility was possible through a streaming server run by Apalya Technologies to receive inputs live and then beam it onwards to BSNL subscribers through the use of GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) technologies. Vamshi Reddy, a director with Apalya Technologies said while they were starting the product titled ‘mimobi.tv’ with 12 channels, more were on the way and in due course, they would offer 30 channels. All that was required was for subscribers to sms ‘MYTV’ to 55447 and download the ‘mimobi.tv’ application. They also had the option of directly downloading the application from http://59.162.166.210.8080/OTA/DownloadMimobiTV, he said.
