Five fishermen rescued after mechanised boat sinks

CUDDALORE: Five fishermen from Old Town had a providential escape after their mechanised boat capsized in rough seas 35 km off the Cuddalore coast on Tuesday. The boat, valued at Rs. 20 lakh, went down along with the fishing nets and fish catch.Two days ago they had set sail from the Cuddalore port area for fishing in the Bay of Bengal.When they were near Kalpakkam, the Meteorological Department had warned of adverse weather on account of the brewing storm on Tuesday.
The boat owner, Karna (37) of Parangipettai, had alerted the fishermen over the cellphone and asked them to return to the shore as early as possible. While the vessel was on its return voyage it was rocked by ferocious waves and finally overturned, throwing all five fishermen in the boat overboard. In the turbulent sea, fishermen Arjunan (40), Abhimanyu (45), Kuppusamy (55), Narayanasamy (58) and Rajendran (40) were fighting to stay afloat.
