CHILD CARE: Health Minister M.R.K.Paneerselvam, Information Minister Parithi Ilamvazhuthi and Health Secretary V.K.Subburaj with children who underwent heart surgery, on the 20th anniversary of ICH’s cardio-thoracic surgery department in Chennai on Wednesday.

CHENNAI: The State Government will tie-up with leading private hospitals to provide treatment to children aged below 12 years in need of early cardio thoracic surgery.

The decision has been necessitated by the long wait-list of child patients in Government hospitals in Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, and Thanjavur for paediatric cardio thoracic surgery, said Health and Family Welfare Minister M.R.K. Pannerselvam here on Wednesday.

Participating in the 20th anniversary of the Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children here and New Born Week Celebrations, he said as these hospitals found it difficult to cope with the increasing number of child patients, the Government had embarked on the novel scheme.

How it works

Under the scheme, the Government would refer cases to select private hospitals where the children would undergo surgery. Government assistance would be in the form of three packages — Rs.10,000 for simple surgeries; Rs. 30,000 for complicated surgeries; Rs. 70,000 for more serious cases. To start with 10 private hospitals had been identified for tie-up.

The Minister said the Children Hospital, Egmore, was one of the best hospitals in Asia and had performed thousands of complicated thoracic surgeries. He said to improve health infrastructure, the Government was filling vacant posts in general hospitals and primary health centres.

Funds sanctioned

Health Secretary V.K. Subburaj said the Government sanctioned Rs.85 crore last year to purchase medical equipment for government hospitals. Major hospitals in the State had state-of-the-art equipment on a par with private hospitals.

Information Minister Parithi Ellamvazhuthi complimented the hospital staff for providing quality treatment to poor children. P.Moorthy, Head of the Department and Additional Professor of Cardio Thoracic Surgery, said the Government sanctioned Rs.14 crore this year for expansion of the hospital.

Saratha Suresh, Director of ICH, said the New Born Week was being celebrated from November 15 to 21 when various welfare schemes for new born kids would be implemented. The objective was to reduce the child mortality in the country.
