Palanisamy passes away

Madurai: The first Arjuna Awardee in volleyball, A. Palanisamy (India No. 1 in 1959 and Asia No. 1 in 1962), died at his residence in Kallampatti, a village in Melur Taluk (Madurai district), on Monday. He was 74.

Palanisamy, a spiker, was always a terror in the court. He had a big jump and smashed with tremendous power either from high or short balls.

He first played for the Madurai City Volleyball Club, which was one of the top teams of the country in the 1950s.

Before joining Southern Railway in 1956, he played in many all-India tournaments for the Madurai teams in various States.

Regular member

Palanisamy shot into prominence after joining the Southern Railway team. He was a regular member of the Indian Railways team in the Nationals and his team went on to win the title in 1959 in Jamshedpur.

He played for the Indian team, which went to Sri Lanka in 1959 and against the touring Russian team in India in 1961.

Palanisamy was a member of the Indian volleyball team which won the silver in the Asian Games at Jakarta in 1962. Though India lost to Japan in the final, Palanisamy was named Asia No. 1 and ‘Black Panther of Asia.’

He was chosen for the first Arjuna Award in volleyball.

He left Southern Railway in 1966 and joined as a coach in Sports Development of Tamil Nadu in 1990, before retiring in 1998.

He is survived by wife, two sons and a daughter.
