KEEPING FINGERS CROSSED: L. Balaji is scheduled to play a one-day and a two-day game next week to assess his match-fitness. CHENNAI: W.V Raman, the Tamil Nadu coach, refused to fix a date for Lakshmipathy Balaji’s return from injury, saying he didn’t want to put pressure on the talented fast-medium bowler. “It’s not about a setting a date and working backwards,” said Raman, when asked if Balaji would be fit for the third round of the Ranji Trophy. “He should come back when he is ready. “It’s now about whether he can reproduce his resurrected action when faced with a batsman.” Raman has worked with Balaji, helping to change his action from mixed, which makes a bowler susceptible to injury, to completely front-on. The 26-year-old, who underwent surgery for a back injury, is scheduled to play a one-day and a two-day game over the next week — matches organised to assess his match-fitness. “If you look at it, you are on the field for two days in a Ranji match,” said Raman. “Balaji needs to bowl and field for two days. If he wakes up fine after 180 overs, the battle is over.” — Special Correspondent
