THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: National Waterway III, between Kollam and Kottappuram, will be inaugurated on November 20. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan told mediapersons after Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting that the inauguration would be held at the inland water terminal at Maradu in Kochi. The Chief Minister said that though Parliament had enacted a law declaring the waterway as back as 1993, the work had not progressed because of various reasons. His government had cleared various impediments such as rehabilitation of people affected and finding of a place for disposal of mud. The Centre had spent Rs.85 crore for developing the 205-km waterway. He said the work on developing waterways south of Kollam and north of Kottappuram had begun. The work on the Kollam Kovalam waterway could be completed in two years. The Centre had sanctioned Rs.100 crore for a new waterway from Kottappuram to Mahe (Vadakara). The waterway would also require two years for completion. A proposal for the development of the sector from Mahe to Neeleswaram had been submitted to the Centre. Besides, a link canal connecting the Nedumbassery airport to Eloor had also been put up for Central assistance. It could be completed at a cost of Rs.20 crore in one and a half years. The foundation stone for the Smart City project would be laid on November 16. The Smart City would provide impetus to the development of the IT industry in the State.
