Minister Ashok launches ‘Kalika Andolana’

Bangalore: “The performers are brought to the front benches, while the slow learners are sent to the last benches. This should change and teachers should pay attention to the slow learners and encourage them to do better,” said R. Ashok, Minister.

He was speaking after launching “Kalika Andolana” here on Wednesday. “Such a campaign is being taken up for the first time in the country. We hope to perfect it and standardise it so that other States take it up as a model,” he said. Mr. Ashok said the parents of slow learners should also be involved in their children’s development. “I urge the teachers to work hard and achieve the goals of the campaign,” he added.

Speaking about the campaign, T.M. Vijay Bhaskar, Principal Secretary, Department of Primary and Secondary Education, said that according to the assessment of the Karnataka School Quality Assessment Organisation, there were 10 per cent of slow learners in every class. “We need to take corrective measures immediately on priority and ensure that the future of these slow learners is not jeopardised,” he added.

Problems such as insufficient teachers, poor infrastructure and so on had been solved. “Support material that has been brought out specially for the campaign will soon reach all schools in the State. In the first phase of the campaign, we will focus on improving competencies in English, mathematics and first language,” he said.

Ramachandra Gowda, former Minister; Basavaraj Gurikar, president of Primary School Teachers’ Association; and N.L. Narendra Babu, Rajajinagar MLA, spoke.
