‘Kaazhcha ‘07’: about human body and recent trends in medical technology

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An eight-day exhibition on the anatomy of the human body titled ‘Kaazhcha ’07’ began at Dr. Somervell Memorial CSI Medical College and Hospital at Karakonam near here on Wednesday. As many as 20 departments in the college and several other institutions are participating in the event. Chairman of the medical college Bishop J.W. Gladstone inaugurated the exhibition. An amalgam of information and entertainment, the exhibition is aimed at providing basic information on human physiology and recent trends in medical technology.

It features human organs, different types of surgeries and medical equipment. It also has stuffed animals, different types of fossils, a marine aquarium and a plant nursery. Other interesting exhibits include a melting man and skeletal orchestra. Game shows and food stalls are added attractions. While the anatomy department has exhibited specimens from the museum, the stall of the biochemistry department demonstrates everything from human DNA to how food gets digested. The pathology department uses specimens and charts to explain various diseases while the exhibits displayed by the pharmacology department focus on drugs and chemicals. The legal aspects of medicine are explained by the forensic medicine department. The department of anaesthesia has set up a live operation theatre as part of the event. Stalls offering medical check-up, health talks and movie shows on lifestyle modification and a pavilion featuring the history of medicine are the other key attractions. An automobile show including the latest models will add to the appeal of the show. . The event is expected to promote better relations between the medical college and the public.

The exhibition will be open from 10 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. The entrance fee is Rs.10 for adults and Rs.5 for children. Special concession will be given for educational institutions. Medical Mission Secretary V. Sajan Prasad, college union vice-chairperson Anjana C. Pillai, organising secretary of the exhibition Bijay Kurien Thomas and general convener C. Gopinathan Nair were present at the inaugural function.
