Civic body Engineers Forum demand strict action against the offenders ‘The councillor objected to Shakil surveying the unauthorised constructions in his zone’ NEW DELHI: The meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi Standing Committee on Wednesday was stormed by its engineers condemning violent ways of the Bharatiya Janata Party councillors and threatening disruption of all further proceedings unless action was taken against displays of aggression by House members. The engineers were protesting against Tuesday’s beating up of Junior Engineer (Buildings) Mohammed Shakil by Darya Ganj BJP councillor Sunder Kumar Chaudhary. According to MCD Engineers Forum general secretary A. P. Khan, Mr. Shakil was roughed up by the councillor at the Darya Ganj Zonal Meeting hall. “The councillor objected to Shakil surveying the unauthorised constructions in his zone and called him to the meeting hall where he was waiting with four other men. The men immobilised Shakil while Chaudhury drew a stick from under his chair and proceeded to beat him with brutality,” said Mr. Khan. The civic body’s engineers later met Municipal Commissioner Ashok Kumar Nigam who reportedly assured them of “strict action against the offenders” after consulting the Lieutenant-Governor of Delhi. Other issues that came up for discussion at the meeting were allocation of land to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. Chairman Vijender Gupta said the MCD was in the process of transferring land to the DMRC for Phase II development work at Rs.22 lakh per acre. The areas where land will be allocated are Kirti Nagar, Hauz Khas, Central Secretariat (for Badarpur corridor) and the Inderlok-Mundka corridor. The civic body also decided to hand over its 400 parks to private players for maintenance. “There are over 600 posts for gardeners which have been lying vacant for several years. We have decided to offer these parks to private contractors for maintenance. The tendering process will be completed soon,” said Mr. Gupta.
