THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has called for ‘eliminating the remnants of feudalism from judiciary.’ Addressing a function organised here on Wednesday to distribute litigant benches in the courts, Mr. Achuthanandan said the first Left government had taken the lead to end feudalism by initiating the land reforms. But such elements were still there in the judiciary. This could be seen in the way how even senior lawyers address the judges, he said. Court buildings do not have basic facilities like drinking water and toilets. But, they function without considering these. The decision to provide 764 benches in the courts for litigants is the first step towards improving the facilities for litigants and witnesses, he said. Law Minister M. Vijayakumar said the government had decided to revise and improve the functioning of the welfare fund for lawyers and advocates. High Court Judge J.B. Koshy urged the government to set up more courts to clear the backlog of cases.
