THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Only an education system focussing on the mother tongue can help children acquire mental strength and will power, poet D. Vinayachandran said here on Wednesday. He was delivering the inaugural address at a children’s meet organised by the Karma socio-cultural organisation at the Ananda Nilayam orphanage at Kuriyathi as part of the Children’s Day celebrations. Mr. Vinayachandran said one’s mother tongue was crucial in moulding a child’s approach to life. He highlighted the need to utilise the revenue generated by places of worship for social development activities like helping children. Later, at an interactive session, Mr. Vinayachandran fielded questions raised by children on various subjects. He exhorted them to lead a disciplined life and follow the great principles of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. As many as 50 destitute children housed in the orphanage and 100 others from the neighbouring areas participated in the function. They also staged a cultural programme, with one of the inmates dressed up as Chacha Nehru. Karma president K. Mahadevan presided over the function. Prizes and gifts were presented to the winners of the competitions conducted as part of the Children’s Day. The NGO also distributed financial assistance and study materials to children whose families are incapable of supporting their education. Ananda Nilayam president N.K. Gopalakrishnan Nair and secretary Kuriyathi B. Sasidharan Nair were also present.
