Prevention is better: M. Venkataramana, MLA, administering filaria pills to a Govindamala devotee in Tirupati on Thursday. TIRUPATI: The Medical and Health Department has allocated 90 lakh tablets 38 lakh population in Chittoor district as part of filaria eradication programme. The programme was launched on Thursday observed as National Filaria Prevention Day. By administering 100-mg tablets to all but children below two years, pregnant women and chronically ill patients, the government plans to keep filaria at bay. Besides the Corporation dispensary in Tirupati and the municipal offices of Chittoor, Madanapalle, Puttur, Nagari, Palamaner, Punganur and Srikalahasti towns, the tablets are being administered in all the 86 primary health centres (PHCs) in the district for three days, said District Medical and Health Officer S. Badruddin. Awareness rallyIn Tirupati, local legislator M. Venkataramana flagged off an awareness rally from the Municipal Corporation’s Maternity and Child Health Centre at R. Nadamuni Reddy circle in the city and himself took the pill. Municipal Commissioner T. Sakala Reddy announced that 2.30 lakh people had been identified for administration of the tablets. The Health Officer B. Bhishmaiah Naidu explained how culex mosquito breeding in sewer lines acted as carriers and left microfilaria into human blood.
