Thalassery is going through a tense period at the moment, following the recent political clashes, but that has not prevented the sports lovers of the town from turning out in large number to see the State senior basketball championship, which opened last Tuesday. “The best thing about conducting a basketball tournament is that you could always be sure of excellent crowds,” said K.O. Oommen, a veteran referee who rarely misses a tournament in the State. “Whenever Thalassery hosted State championships the stands were full.” Kerala Basketball Association secretary and local man V.C. Hashim said the crowd for the tournament, which concludes on Sunday, would have been even bigger but for the law and order situation in the region. “People are a bit cautious and want to reach home early,” he said. However, inside the Municipal Stadium, there are only scenes of celebration, with the spectators cheering on their favourite teams at the top of their lungs, backed up by the rhythmic beats of chenda.
