CHANDIGARH: Impressing upon the teaching community the need to create a harmonious academic environment in educational institutions to ensure emotional and physical growth of students, Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator S. F. Rodrigues on Thursday made a forceful plea for developing innovative strategies for imparting quality and value-based education. Addressing a Conclave of Teachers on “Zero tolerance for corporal punishment in City Beautiful” organised under the Child Protection Programme, General Rodrigues emphasised the need for strengthening contact between teachers and parents to sort out children’s issues with a positive approach and helping them to live and work co-operatively and to institute a sense of self-discipline. Formidable taskGen Rodrigues said the teachers had a formidable task in intellectual and moral education of children and for helping them to be confident and good human beings. Bright opportunities awaited children and it was the responsibility of the teaching community to prepare young boys and girls to enable them to meet these challenges, he added. He said children who have no access to good education should be empowered. The heads of institutions and teachers must come forward with proposals to bring the maximum number of children into the fold of education and help in minimising the growing divide between haves and have-nots. ProgrammeThe Administration had already launched a programme to reach out in the settlements inhabited by disadvantaged sections of society and the teaching community had a crucial role to play as catalysts, he said.
