Works on to provide water supply

NAMAKKAL: Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board has taken up works to provide drinking water to 17 habitations in Puthuchatram block, Collector G. Sundaramurthi said.

Participating at a special mass contact programme held at Elur village near here on Wednesday, the Collector said that the board was carrying out the works at an estimated cost of Rs. 90.62 lakh in the block. Besides, the board had already created drinking water supply provisions at a cost of Rs. 10.66 lakh at two habitations in Elur village panchayat, he added.

Mr. Sundaramurthi said that the district administration was carrying out 83 development works in Elur panchayat at a cost of Rs. 16.51 lakh this financial year. Similarly, it had taken up 49 works to the tune of Rs. 4.73 lakh in Thathathiripuram panchayat and four works at a cost of Rs. 1.24 lakh in Lakkapuram panchayat.

The Collector said that the administration was implementing several programmes to improve the agricultural productivity in the district. The programmes covered crops including paddy, maize, pulses, cotton, coconut and oilseeds. Subsidy was being provided to the farmers to take up micro irrigation (drip or sprinkler). Training programmes were also being organised to transform the modern cultivation technologies to the farmers, he added. He distributed welfare assistance to the tune of 5.26 lakh to 88 beneficiaries.
