Special traffic drive launched

ALAPPUZHA: With the onset of the Sabarimala pilgrim season, the Road Transport Authority (RTA) has swung into action to curb illicit operations of private vehicles that are trying to cash in on the rush of pilgrims.

A special drive that was launched in Chengannur, Mavelikara and Pandalam here on Thursday under the supervision of Deputy Transport Commissioner (South Zone) P.S. Jose and comprising Alappuzha Road Transport Officer (RTO) Abdul Shukoor, Joint RTOs V.M. Rajan, Sreekumar and B.J. Antony and Motor Vehicle Inspectors Shibu K. Itty and Shaji Panicker resulted in 278 vehicles being charged for various violations of traffic rules.

While the amount received as penalty under various heads totalled to a staggering Rs.1.57 lakh, 30 vehicles were seized for plying without paying road taxes.

As many as 78 cases of drivers operating without valid driving licences were registered while 18 were charged with rash and negligent driving. The remaining cases were related to non-possession of pollution under control certificates and illicit operations.

RTA officials said the drive would continue and that the department would crack the whip on illicit operations from Chengannur, where the incidence was rampant in particular. The RTA’s special purpose vehicle, Speed Tracer, too is being deployed in the region to check violation of traffic rules.
