New leader: K. Somaprasad who took charge as the president of Kollam district panchayat on Thursday. KOLLAM: CPI(M) leader K. Somaprasad took charge as the president of the Kollam district panchayat at a function here on Thursday. He was unanimously elected to the post of the president. Mr. Somaprasad’s election is on the basis of an understanding within the Left Democratic Front. As per the understanding, the post would be occupied for the first term by the CPI. CPI leader of the party K. Devaki, who occupied the post, stepped down last month to enable a CPI(M) member occupy it. The understanding would be effected for the post of vice-president too. The first one went to the RSP and then to the CPI(M). Mr. Somaprasad represents the Kunnathur division in the district panchayat committee. The function was presided over by District Collector A. Shajehan. Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran addressed the gathering.
