Hubli-Dharwad
Workshop for police personnel held in Hubli Karnataka among six States with high HIV incidence HUBLI: Additional Director-General of Police (Training and Recruitment) D.V. Guruprasad has opined that the role of police personnel in keeping a check on HIV/AIDS, sex profession and immoral trafficking was crucial. He was inaugurating a workshop for police personnel on “HIV/AIDS, sex profession and Immoral Trafficking (Prevention) Act” organised by the Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissionerate, State Police Department and Karnataka Health Promotion Trust (KHPT) in Hubli on Thursday. Mr. Guruprasad observed that police personnel should be more sensitive to such issues and play an active role in preventing the menace. He also called upon them to take precautionary measures especially when shifting blood-stained dead bodies. Police personnel should educate the sex professionals on the hazards of unsafe sex, he said. He said 2,000 police personnel had undergone orientation programmes on the issues and in the coming days similar programmes would be held for the 80,000 personnel of the department. Elaborating on the objectives of the workshop, KHPT Managing Director Vandana Gurnani said that Karnataka was one among the six States in the country where high incidences of HIV/AIDS had been recorded. Mr. Guruprasad said that Karnataka model of police recruitment was the most transparent and it was being adapted by the Uttar Pradesh Government. Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Guruprasad said that recently the Uttar Pradesh Government had invited him to Lucknow to give information on the police recruitment system in Karnataka. He said the recruitment process of 161 police sub-inspectors had begun and would be completed by March 2008.
