Commitment required to uplift life of farmers: Speaker

Staff Correspondent

KOLAR: Legislative Assembly Speaker Krishna laid stress on the need for introspection regarding the much-touted success of the cooperative movement in ameliorating the woes of farmers in the State. If the cooperative societies work with commitment, 90 per cent of the problems of the farming community will be solved, Mr. Krishna said while inaugurating 54th All India Cooperative Week here on Wednesday.

Referring to the rampant corruption and nepotism in the cooperative societies, the Speaker lamented that the cooperative sector, which was set up with a noble cause, has now become the grazing ground for politicians and other selfish people. Citing a few success stories in Maharashtra in the cooperative sector, Mr. Krishna called upon cooperatives in Karnataka to learn from the models of Maharashtra, Gujarat and other States. He recalled the contribution of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in the development of the cooperative sector.

The schemes of any government will be meaningful only when the benefit reaches the common man, he said. Regretting the dilution of movements of peasants and other sections of society, the Speaker exhorted the youth to be united and wage struggles, which, he termed, are only weapons to protect their future.

Concern

Expressing deep anguish over the trend of giving priority to the rich people, Mr. Krishna expressed concern that a day may come when more people having underworld connections may be elected to Assemblies and Parliament. It is necessary to wage a second war of Independence to safeguard the interests of the common masses, he stressed.
