Bangalore: Several premier institutions of the country currently working on Indian languages technology such as Central Institute Indian Languages (CIIL), Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore), Indian Institute of Technology (Mumbai and Chennai) and Indian Institute of Information Technology (Hyderabad) have decided to set up a Linguistic Data Consortium of Indian Languages (LDC_IL) according to the Director of CIIL Udaya Narayana Singh. This project has been approved by the Planning Commission. According to Prof. Singh, language data is a key component for research and development in language technology. It involves collection, processing and annotation of data in compliance with various disciplines such as linguistic science, statistics and engineering. The proposed consortium will function on the lines of a similar consortium set up at the University of Pennsylvania, in the US. It will create and manage large databases of Indian languages and provide a forum for researchers in the country and abroad, Prof. Singh said. The objectives of the LDC_IL are: To develop into a repository of linguistic resources in all the Indian languages in the form of text, speech and lexical corpora; all interested and reputed institutions and organisations working in that direction will be encouraged to facilitate the creation of such data bases; to set standards for data collection and storage of material for different research and development activities; for facilitating translation of scholarly material at all levels; and provide guidance in the methodology of translation and impart training in technical aspects and the process related issues through workshops and seminars. The proposed National Translation Mission, the ongoing National Testing Servicesand the LDC_IL are hosted and managed by the CIIL, Prof. Singh said.
