Bangalore: The State Government is making significant investments in the rural sector, almost on a par with money being spent on urban development. However, to speed up rural infrastructure development, there is a need for technology integration and construction machinery, according to Development Commissioner Sudhakar Rao. He was speaking at the International Conference on Construction Equipment Industry, EXCON 2007, here on Thursday organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). Mr. Rao appealed to the captains of industry to set up training institutes to train manpower in the use of construction equipment to achieve better performance in the execution of infrastructure projects. There was a need for the industry to manufacture construction equipment suitable for rural areas. Chairman of the organising committee of EXCON 2007 Vipin Sondhi said that the construction industry in India employed 32 million people, which was second to agriculture in terms of employment. He stressed the need to improve competitiveness in the sector.
