Pay in rupee to visit monuments, foreigners told
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: To offset any loss of revenue due to the falling exchange rates of the dollar, the government has made it mandatory for foreigners visiting monuments to pay the entry fee in Indian currency.
The fee per person for foreigners has now been fixed at Rs.250 for World Heritage Sites and Rs.100 for other monuments under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Previously, a foreigner had to pay $5 as fee for World Heritage Sites and $2 for other ASI monuments.
According to a release by the Union Ministry for Tourism & Culture, the government has decided to make this change “in view of the international practices and also to avoid any anomaly on account of falling exchange rates of the U.S. dollar vis-À-vis the rupee and the consequent fall in revenues.”
