Two-day event to be held in New Delhi First Ladies of 10 countries invited NEW DELHI: As a follow-up to the White House Conference on Global Literacy in September 2006, India will host a two-day UNESCO Regional Conference here from November 29. The meeting will be inaugurated by United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi, and writer Mahasweta Devi will deliver the keynote address. Fourth in the seriesThe Delhi conference is the fourth in the series of six regional conferences — covering the Arab states, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean — being organised to promote literacy. The White House conference was hosted by U.S. First Lady Laura Bush, who is also Honorary Ambassador for the United Nations Literacy Decade. The First Ladies of 10 countries — Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Maldives, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan — have been invited to the Delhi conference. The Education and Finance Ministers of these countries, besides those of India, Iran, Nepal and Turkmenistan, will participate in the deliberations. A ‘Fair of Best Practices’ will be held to showcase successful programmes from the participating countries to pool resources in the global fight against illiteracy to meet the Millennium Development Goal of a lettered world by 2015.
