dated November 16, 1957: Research station

The Highways Research Station, the first of its kind in South India, the primary function of which is to reduce the cost of construction and maintenance of roads and bridges, at the same time, maintaining a high level of efficiency, was declared open on November 14 by Mr. K. Kamaraj, Chief Minister of Madras. The Highways Research Station is located on a 23.5 acres plot to the west of Engineering College, Guindy, Madras and will house the main testing laboratories, a library, indexing room, auditorium and administrative offices.
