MEG keeps title

BANGALORE: Madras Engineering Group (MEG) reasserted its supremacy in the State ‘A’ division basketball league championship for men with a 63-57 victory over Vijaya Bank in the final at the Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium courts here on Thursday.

It was MEG’s second successive win over Vijaya Bank this season. It had beaten Vijaya Bank in the JSC Cup tournament last month.

Vijaya Bank held the upper hand in the first quarter as it raced to a 20-8 lead, but MEG fought back splendidly to snatch a three point lead at the break (30-27).

The fortune swung in Vijaya Bank’s favour again as it seized a four-point lead (45-41) in the third quarter before MEG turned the tables in the final quarter.

Peter John and Tinu Joseph, with 16 points each, were the toast of MEG, while Ashraf Ali (10) and Murali Mohan (9) were the main scorers for Vijaya Bank.

The result: Final: MEG 63 (Peter John 16, Tinu Joseph 16) bt Vijaya Bank 57 (Ashraf Ali 16, Murali Mohan 9).

Horo on song

Kamal Horo slammed four goals to power Corps of Military Police to a 7-0 victory over MEG Boys in the BEL Colony Youth Association’s State-level hockey tournament at the Dr. Ambedkar Stadium in Jalahalli on Thursday.

Horo struck in the 12th, 27th, 52nd and 57th minutes, while Manoj Tirkey (44th and 46th) and Baxla (56th) chipped in to complete a resounding win for CMP, which entered the semifinals. In another quarterfinal, HMT defeated East India Hockey Club 3-0 with Asif Sharif (10th), Ravikumar (22nd) and Palani Kumar (27th) scoring.

Match drawn

It was a goal glut in the super league football championship at the Football Stadium here on Thursday as Southern Blues and BEL Sports Club shared the points with a 4-4 draw. At break, BEL led 2-1.

A brace by A. Roy (65th and 80th) put Southern Blues on top after Nirmal Kumar’s early strike in the 17th minute.

Later, Chandrashekar scored the fourth one for Southern Blues. BEL had the upper hand in the first session with goals through Murtuza (12th) and Devan (42nd). Later, Lal scored the third goal for BEL in 57th minute. Seconds before the final whistle, Goverdhan hammered the equaliser for BEL.

Earlier in an ‘A’ division encounter, Government Press defeated AGORC 2-0. Dhanaseelan (38th) and Sethurman (79th) were the scorers.

MVIT posts win

Sir M. Visveswarya Institute of Technology defeated JSS Academy for Technical Education by 43 runs in the opening match of inter-engineering colleges Twenty20 cricket tournament here on Thursday.

The scores: MVIT 147 for four in 20 overs (Manju Ajay 57, Mahindra 43) bt JSSATE 104 for seven in 20 overs.
