Tragedy at Sri Shirdi Saibaba temple
Staff Reporter
VISAKHAPATNAM: Three persons, including two women, were killed and 16 others injured when an extension slab under construction at the temple of Sri Shirdi Saibaba in Ukkunagaram collapsed on Thursday evening.
The dead have been identified as R. Nookaraju (23) of K.N. Palem of Pedagantyada mandal, Durgalamma (23), a married woman, and Durga (19) of Vadacheepurupalli village. Of the injured, three have been shifted to the King George Hospital while the rest are undergoing treatment at the Steel General Hospital.
A pall of gloom descended on the Steel Plant township with the relatives of the dead and injured labourers wailing inconsolably and rescue workers trying to retrieve the bodies from under the debris.
While the body of Nookaraju was retrieved around 6.30 p.m., the bodies of the women could not be retrieved even at 8.30 p.m. as iron rods had to be cut with gas cutters.
Same day last year
Top police officials, CISF, Steel Plant, Fire Department personnel supervised the rescue operations.
Trade union leaders attributed the tragedy to the “callousness” of the Steel Plant authorities.
They said that on the same day last year the slab of the Ukkunagaram Gana Sabha under construction had collapsed killing several workers.
Following that incident, the management had assured no new constructions would be approved without proper plans and supervision.
