Tuticorin: Lakhs of pilgrims witnessed `Soorasamharam’, conducted as part of the `Kandha Sashti’ festival at the Lord Subramaniaswamy Temple at Tiruchendur on Thursday.

The ‘Soorasamharam’ began at around 5 p.m., with the idol of Jayanthinathar and those of demons were taken out in a procession from the temple to the beach, where the ritual was held.

According to a legend, Lord Subramania killed Gajamughasooran, Singamughasooran and Soorapadman and saved mankind. The devotees chanted devotional songs. The Soorasamharam ended with a puja at the ‘Santhosha Mandapam’.

Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment K.R. Periakaruppan, Minister of State for Home Affairs Radhika Selvi, Collector R. Palaniyandi and Superintendent of Police Deepak Motibhai Damor, participated.

The police provided a special bandobust around the temple for the smooth conduct of the event.

Around 800 police personnel, including one Additional Superintendent of Police and 11 Deputy Superintendents of Police from Tuticorin and Tirunelveli districts and 175 Home Guards, were deployed, as part of the security arrangements.

The police also established watch towers near the beach to monitor the movement of the crowd.

Chlorinated water

The Health department ensured that water supplied to the devotees was chlorinated, to prevent spreading of any water borne diseases.
