WITH FERVOUR: Devotees witnessing ‘Surasamharam’ festival at Palani on Thursday. PALANI: Thousands of devotees witnessed ‘Surasamharam’ festival, annihilation of Asuras, which was celebrated with religious fervour on four Giri Veedhis of Sri Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple on Thursday evening. After special pujas and aradhanas, Lord Chinnakumaraswamy received the holy lance from Malai Kozhunghu Amman at the hill temple around 3 p.m. and reached the foothills to destroy the Asuras. The Sanctum Sanctorum was closed immediately. Meanwhile, Goddesses Sri Valli and Sri Deivanai were brought from Periya Nayaki Amman Temple to Padhavinayagar Temple, near the foothill. Meanwhile, his army led by his war general Veerabahu was kept ready to take on Tharaka Suran on North Giri Street. In a fiery battle, Lord Muruga killed Tharaka Suran and proceeded to East Giri Veedhi to fight Banugopan. After killing Banugopan, Lord Chinnakumarasamy destroyed Singamugan who intercepted him on South Giri Veedhi. At last, Sura Padman was extirpated on West Giri Veedhi. Triumph over evil (Asuras) was celebrated at Ariyar Mandapam near Padhavinayagar Temple. Special pujas were performed to Lord Chinnakumarasamy to calm down. Later, the Lord ascended on Indra Vimanam and gave darshan to devotees. Devotees started thronging the North Giri Veedhi near Padhavinayagar temple since evening. Sufficient force was deployed on Giri Veedhis to provide adequate security to devotees. Thirukalyanam, celestial wedding, will take place at the hill temple between 9 a.m. and 10.30 a.m. and at Sri Periya Nayaki Amman temple in the town between 6 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. on Friday. The utsavamurthy will be mounted on golden horse and taken in a procession around the temple the same day. With the celestial wedding, the seven-day Skanda Sashti festival will come to an end. Karthikai Deepam festival would commence on the hill temple immediately.
