TIRUVARUR: A sum of Rs. 12 crore has been allotted by the Central Government in the first phase for implementation of National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in Tiruvarur district, said State Minister for Dairy Development U. Mathivanan here on Thursday.
He inaugurated the works under the scheme at Thiruvathiraimangalam in Tiruvarur Panchayat union and Vikrapandiyan in Kottur panchayat union.
He said that works under the scheme started on Thursday in five village panchayats in each of the 10 panchayat unions in the district. Under the scheme, eligible persons are given 100 days of work in a year.
In Tiruvarur district, there are 6.95 lakh eligible persons for taking up manual work. Out of them, identity cards for providing work under the scheme have been given to three lakh people. District Collector M. Chandrasekar spoke.
