Mathematics, science have taken a backseat: former VC

Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: The former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore J. Shashidhara Prasad has lamented that science and mathematics have taken a backseat in all the universities across the world mainly because of lucrative jobs in the field of information technology.

Inaugurating a 10-day programme on “Perfect graphs and their applications” at the Regional Institute of Education (RIE) here on Thursday, Mr. Prasad highlighted the importance of studying basic sciences and mathematics which he said were the real pre-requisites for promotion of research in science. He said the launching of Sputnik was mainly due to research in basic science.

It was a happy augury that the Union Government had constituted Knowledge Commission mainly to attract talented students to the field of science and mathematics.

He said that the holistic approach to knowledge was lacking. Efforts should be made to promote this because science and mathematics were always interdependent, he added.

B.D. Acharya, adviser to the mathematics sciences office, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, who was the chief guest, explained the importance of perfect graphs and their applications.

E. Sampath Kumar of department of mathematics, who presided over the function, stressed the need for work in the area of semi graphs. Joint director of the NCERT G. Ravindra and RIE principal G.T. Bhandage were present.
